Post #207 Today’s feature is a poem I wrote in 1991. Bob and I were driving my Nissan 300ZX across the country from western Pennsylvania, to Cupertino, California. We had the T-top out of the car to let in the breeze as we traveled west on I-80. This was the first cross-country trip by car for us and we were excited. We were seeing the landscape change as we drove from one state to the next. All of it was new to us. We didn’t want to miss anything.
As Bob drove, I had my writing pad on my lap and I was writing my way across the country. I wrote a collection of poems as we visited each new place on our journey. Some time later, I wrote the poem, “Passing Through Wyoming,” from my copious notes of our time on the road.
This series of poems was quietly awaiting my attention. I have sent only a few of them out for publication. I plan to return to this series of poems and reflections – they are gems.
Have you written in your journal while you were on a trip?
It is fun to do and later on, when you return from your trip, you can use your notes to create an essay or poem about the trip and what you experienced. Your notes will give you the road map to the poem or essay, long after the trip is only a memory.
You can use your journal or notebook to take notes as you travel. Try it next time you are on a trip. |
