Wild Geese in Winter
Do you live in an area where you have a real old-fashioned WINTER season?
If so, the days can begin to feel long and monotonous by late February.
The festive holiday seasons of early winter is only a memory now.
Today, I read a poem by Mary Oliver – “Wild Geese.” This inspired me to write a poem.

Wild Geese in Winter
by Lynda McKinney Lambert
I glance out my window
and begin to write a poem
consider my ordinary day
the wild geese in my little piece of world
they travel across the sky every day
above distant treetops of the woods.
stop whatever I am doing when I hear them coming.
I want to lay face-down on the earth
and whisper, “I am nothing.”
“I am nothing, Lord.”
the morning view from my window is a snow globe landscape.
I am warm and snug inside my home
wild geese fly over the tree tops on wintry days
a trajectory from north to south
my husband sits in his reclining chair
in the corner of his yellow reading room
stacks of books surround him
his dog, the queen of our home
on her blue velvet throne
stares out the window as snow covers the road
I am upstairs in my library
sorting through Czech fire-polished beads
and black Tahitian pearls
my cat sits on a shelf beside rows of poetry books
watches over me
as I work at my craft
in front of the eastern window
wild geese fly over the tree tops of my wintry days.

This post today is to honor the memory of one of America’s favorite poets, Mary Oliver.
Mary gave us all insight into the world of nature and the outdoor.
