Today:  We look at some 3-D Art

I am posting  a few of the items that are in my studio – surrounded by

the beautiful work of friends.

This is Week 3 of our  Photo Tour  of River Road Studio in the Village of Wurtemburg, Pennsylvania.

 

I began to make  POTTERY after losing most of my sight in 2007.

A friend took me to Sweetwater Center for the Arts   where I was given a lump of clay on the first day of class.  I had not made pottery since I was an undergraduate student working on my BFA in painting (1985- 1989).  This was my first experience at trying to do anything art-related. It was before I began the “Adjustment to Blindness” program at the Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services in Pittsburgh.

My hands remembered what to do with the clay!  It did not matter at all that I could not see the clay – my hands had a memory of making pottery from years before, and soon I was creating pots.  In the photo below, you can see the kind of pots that I was making.

This was gifted to me by a board member of Hoyt Art Center when I resigned from the Hoyt to accept a new position at Geneva College. This plate was in the 1996 Hoyt National Art Show. This is one of my favorite treasures in my art collection.

I love gemstones and stones in general.

This is a small sculpture by Jeannie Baroutsis –  I bought quite a few of her little stone sculptures over the years.  In this photo, her stone sculpture is the base and I have placed 2 beautiful Magnetized Hematite Stones on top.  I love putting little things together! *

This is a fiber bowl.  I knit this shape, and then I put it in boiling water to make it shrink and felt.

I made a number of different sizes of bowls, using a variety of yarns – I like to put a ball of yarn in this bowl when I am knitting.  It keeps the ball in place and I can carry it with me in my handbag to wherever I am knitting.

This is a ceramic RAKU piece that I made in a pottery course at Slippery Rock University of PA. I was a BFA student there from 1985 to 198. My degree is in painting but I took courses in all forms of art during those years.  I loved working with clay and making RAKU pieces – I love the scorching and the unusual effects that doing a RAKU firing  provides.  I have a little collection of  pottery  I did during those years.

I love  vintage glass – This egret was made by the West Virginia glass factory and it is VIKING GLASS.

I began collecting VIKING GLASS around 1961 and had an extensive collection.  I gifted most of that collection to my grandson, Matthew Barry, who is a glass maker in Colorado Spring, CO.  I kept a few of my favorite pieces – and I love the birds that Viking Glass made . this is one of them, in opaque black glass.

This is a hand-crafted ceramic mug by Shania Alexandria Conner –  Colorado Springs, Co.

I received  this as a gift, along with other pieces by Shania, one Christmas. Each piece is cherished.

I love the feel of this mug – the glaze is so silky-to-the-touch.  And, the color – WOW!

I prefer to drink from hand crafted ceramic mugs and glasses. There is nothing to compare with them – and they are a pleasure to pick up and drink your favorite coffee or tea.

This is a DRUM that was made by one of my students who was from Africa.  He was in my course on African Poetry, and made this as a gift for me – Yes!  He was a great student and i will always remember him every time I look at this beautiful drum.

I collected carvings from Africa.  These are two favorites that are on a shelf in the Studio.   I have a number of sculptures and masks from Africa – I admire the beauty of the wood and the carvings of the pieces.  They bring such good energy to my studio.

This is a sculpture by Jeanne Baroutsis of Slippery Rock, PA.

We became friends as we were both BFA students there in the mid-80s.  We have remained friends over the years.  For this stone sculpture, she also used shells she gathered at the seashore on a summer vacation.  I love the textures of the stone and the shells.

This is a wall piece – an assemblage – I constructed this with a variety of different scraps of wood. I loved the vintage paints and the angles of these fragments.  In fact, the sculptures that I made in this group became the color scheme for my kitchen in late 2020.  Three little treasures on my top shelf in the River Road Studio –  a BOX that was a Christmas Gift from a friend – it has a lovely crystl knob on top. I use this as a Prayer Box, and I put the names of people I am praying for in this box.

In the center  of the shelf is a hand-crafted stained glass lamp shade by Robert Schoenberg, who used to teach Stained Glass Classes at the Hoyt when I was the director there. He is one of the many wonderful artists who worked in our classes, and I cherish this little lamp he made.

 

On the far right is a ceramic bowl for holding yarn.  It has a unique cutout on one side so that you can place  a ball of yarn in the bowl  and it will not roll away as you are knitting or crocheting.

I found this delightful little sculpture in Prague, Czech Republic.

When I was teaching every summer in Europe, I visited Prague every year.  This colorful bird makes me happy every time I look at it.

Yes I have a preference for hand-crafted bowls in all materials.  This is one made of SASSAFRASS and I bought it from the artisan at a festival in Glenville, West Virginia.  I wish I had bought more of her work – this bowl is so light weight and so pretty.

Here is another of the bowls made for knitting or crocheting – you can see the shape that is cut into it. This holds the yarn securely in the bowl. No more chasing after runaway yarn balls.  And, look how  pretty!

These two wood vessels were created by a local man.  We sold his work in the gift gallery at the Hoyt wen I was director there.  I purchased the tallest vessel from the gift shop.  The smaller one was a gift to me when I was leaving to begin my new career at Geneva College. The man wanted me to have this gift because I had sold so many of his bowls and vases – it was a gift of gratitude, he told me. WOW – such lovely people!

This is one of my FAVORITE object s – a bowl that is hand crafted with hand-made paper – and it has a hand – crafted netting that covers the paper saturated in bees wax.  And, just look – that is  FLICKER FEATHERS  on the top of the bowl.   I purchased this bowl from a member of Christians in the Visual Arts.  I was a member of that international organization for quite a lot of years.  I also organized and supervised  some traveling art exhibitions for this group – the works in the shows traveled to galleries and museums all over the country.  This was a great learning experience.
