“Köenigsee”
Fanfare & Ballyhoo – Here is where I Celebrate my Writing Life
My poem, “Köenigsee” will appear in the Winter Issue of The Avocet.
I wrote this poem from notes in my sketchbook one summer in Austria. I traveled from my village in Grödig, Austria to Köenigsee, Germany, in a ferry boat. That is how everyone arrives in Köenigsee, for there are no roads to this little Alpine village. We must cross the wide expanse of the lake that lies between the towering mountains. Even in the warmest months of summer, the mountains have snow-covered caps, and the lake is bitter cold.
After an afternoon of enjoying the visit, I got on the last boat to go back to my village.
Note: The German word, “Königsee,” means “Kings Lake.” in English.
Köenigsee
Swift winds bring low temperatures
clouds conceal marble mountain peaks
Chiffon grey skies
press down on clustered red-tiled roofs,
narrow doorways
slow moving tourists
in Köenigsee.
Long ferry boats
glide silently
across the frigid green lake
laughing Germans sing of home
waves break beyond our boat.
In the final hour of night
before mountains disappear
my chilled body reaches downward
seeking shelter
in the next bus to Grödig.
Köenigsee” was written in July 200, in Grödig, Austria.)
