The Week in Photos – River Road Studio #5
Writing and Art
*
This week is good for working in the studio.
Why is that?
We had quite a lot of snow this week. That’s always a positive thing because I love winter and the peacefulness of the studio on those cold days. My studio is a sanctuary where I spend a lot of time on wintry days.

NEW THIS WEEK – in Art
I am working every day on
Winter Wonderland
(3-part series for the wall)
The 3 pieces are moving along very well. I’ve been able to spend most days working in the studio with the bright wintry-sunshine streaming through the Venetian blind and brightening the entire studio. And, while I am working, I am also listening to a good book. I’ve been reading “The Tin Drum,” which is 3 books. I am about finished with Book 3 and really enjoyed this book while I am working in the studio. See it here!
I work in STEPS –
Step 1 is planning the size of the work and making the selection for fabric colors and gathering the materials that will become part of the art work.
For Winter Wonderland, I am making 3 pieces.
One is a long rectangle; one is a short rectangle, and one is square.

Step 2 is when the actual bead working begins.
I am working on Step 2 of the process – it is called “Capturing the Cabs.”
Once I have decided where the cabochons and other objects will be place, then I begin doing the bead working techniques that will affix them to the surface. This week I managed to get most of this completed. I think that after I work today, all of the cabochons and found objects will be captured and then – I will move on to Step 3. I will save that for another article.
Encrusted Bead Work is what I do in the studio.
This method is extremely time-intensive. I was blessed with patience!
It is meditative and peaceful – nothing can be rushed or moved to completion any faster.
I work one little stitch at a time – one tiny bead at a time. Hour after hour, I am patiently doing the WORK that will eventually become a work of art. Since I was a painter most of my life, I view these new fiber pieces as “paintings” but instead of a brush and pigments on a canvas, I use a tiny needle, threads, stones, beads, and found objects.
Here is a little glimpse into where the 3 pieces are this morning. Below: Winter Wonderland #1: 4 x 11 inches.
Above – I lay out the cabochons and found object (a piece of coral to the left)
I make a boarder outline that defines the size of the work – I am using a cotton fabric that is a cloudy grey-white.
As you can see, I am beginning to do some bead working around the gemstone cabochons.
Winter Wonderland #2 is a rectangle shape – This is step 2 that I am now developing. I’ve made the border outline and beginning to surround the gemstones – using PEYOTE STITCH with Size 6 Japanese Seed Beads.
Above, is Winter Wonderland #3 – it is a SQUARE SHAPE. – 5 x 5 inches
I’ve worked a border around the square to define my space for the art work that I will be creating.
Notice that each border is different – each is a variation of the others. My palette will be slightly different from each piece to the other two. Mainly, I am thinking of the subtle colors of winter – Snow – Shadows – Plant Life resting in Winter – and atmospheric effects on the earth and sky. Black, Grey, Silver, White – Japanese Seed Beads.
POPS of COLOR will peek from the wintry scenes
If you pay attention you will find brilliant gems of colors outside on a winter day.
Blue, green, hot pink – and many other bright colors will surprise you when you begin to pay attention.
Some Additional Notes on my Process…
I do not work on each one separately – I work on all three simultaneously.
I might spend a day or two on one piece, and then I will move on to a second piece for awhile and finally pick up the third piece. My goal in each step is to get each piece to the point of completion at the same time. The goal for this week is to get all the cabs captured on all three pieces. I am almost there as I write this post today. If I stay focused and keep working, I may get to the final stage of Step 2 .

Next week we look at where I get inspiration for my art works and writing.
I will share a few ART books on my shelves in the studio.
I’ll give you more ways I stay focused and how I ” keep – on – keep on – keeping on ” with my creative life.
I’ve been making ART since 1976 at River Road Studio, The Village of Wurtemburg, Pennsylvania.
