On October 18, 2020, I intended to write a new book of non-fiction stories, and poetry. I planned to create the new book as a companion to my book, Walking by Inner Vision: Stories & Poems (published 2017 by DLD Books. See it here.
I thought I would name the new book,
Gifts for the Spirit: Stories & Poems
Often, changes in life bring our plans to a halt.
If not a complete stop, then perhaps a delay and change is the appropriate response. I am confident this is what happened to my ambitious plan envisioned two years ago.
That book has been on the back burner of my mind for over two years as I was tending to my husband’s medical needs. Our journey with acute myeloid leukemia began in January 2014. What we did not know at that time when we were focused on getting Bob through the harsh treatments and stem cell transplant, was that another enemy was growing inside of Bob. No medications or treatment could resolve or change the dementia that he was dealing with for the past nine years.
My husband, Bob, needed much more attention as dementia began taking over all of our days and nights. He grew progressively more detached from reality as the years passed.
For the past six months, my husband, Bob, is currently living in a memory care facility near our home.
Now, I am taking little steps to learn how to live alone for the first time in my life. I am learning how to take over Bob’s responsibilities, which were done so well under his watch. He was a brilliant businessman, an excellent financial planner, and a dedicated homeowner, husband, father, and grandfather. Bob kept our home and property in tip-top condition. As his conditioned changed over the years, those responsibilities and concerns are not relevant to him.
As I approach the final two months of 2022, I decided it is now the right time to go back to my book plan and think about starting over again. We shift, and we change. And that is what keeps us going.
Today, I looked over the outline I created two years ago. I have an enormous task before me, but I believe that by the time the New Year arrives in 2023, I’ll have my path laid out, and I can begin working on Gifts for the Spirit: Stories & Poems.
I think we can adjust and learn to shift and change with the challenges we encounter. We learn to see the positive personal qualities we gain with each of the challenges. We begin to see with our heart. We stay centered on living out our mission to serve God in all circumstances. Even through times of shift and change, we are steadfast. We are centered and focused because our faith is in Christ alone.
I suggest the greatest challenge to Christians in the business world is within – making the heart determination (simply put, the choice) to live by God’s principles and sticking with it; making the commitment to serving Christ and mankind with our efforts, our gifts and our knowledge.
