Viewing Red Falls

Akiko Kotani draws her lines
thick red thread twists and turns,
high voltage shocks of energy
Splurge, plunge, splash, curl.
“BEWARE – SCARLET LINES TUMBLING DOWN!
Criss-crossing, draping, leaping Red falls
Oh! The color is magnificent!
Gestures of emotion shattering space
standing beside the red waterfall
She holds the red ball of woven images
displaced from towering shadows
near the painted grey ceiling
On rainy summer mornings
she examines the contours of a life-journey
capturing shards of fractured gravity
You are an ancient scribe kneeling
sifting and sorting rubicund threads
harvesting life waiting beneath the surface.

Backstory:
Akiko Kotani is a fiber artist who lives in Florida. She is a retired professor of fine art and I studied with her during my years at Slippery Rock University as I worked to earn my BFA Degree in painting. She mentored me and gave me a passion for fiber art. Recently, I saw photos of her latest work at an art gallery. This poem is the response I wrote while viewing a photo of her standing beside her powerful sculpture of fiber that has the feeling of a red waterfall plunging from the ceiling of the gallery.
Art and artists are the focus and theme for my poetry and non-fiction essays. I honor and celebrate the artists and their work in my writing. Akiko Kotani was a major influence in my creative life during my academic studies and remains so to this day.
