“Preparations for Winter”
Preparations for winter began
when tender spring rains
trickled down through layers
of muddy earth and debris
revealed underground secrets
Red tulip bulbs and
Iris rhizomes woke up
beneath melting snow blankets.
Optimistic summertime erased memories
stored beneath fertile soil
as temperatures changed the days.
Bees swarmed on stonecrop’s abundant nectar
gathered honey from clover flowers.
Weed bandits invaded the peaceful gardens.
Days became shorter
Nights lingered
gardens began to play dress-up
sported colorful outfits
Colorful leaves plummeted
branches crashed to the music
of wind-chimes
time to plant our new dreams deep.
Our garden vanished
Wind blasts changed the landscape
frost-glazed windows
revealed
treacherous ice and snow drift
Wintertime brings
promise of culmination for
roots, bulbs, seeds, rhizomes.
The Backstory~
This is a description of my own garden experiences in my little village in Western Pennsylvania. I love winter more than any other season. I hope my poem captures my love of this beautiful, solitary season.
