A Togetherness Poem
©Lynda McKinney Lambert
6 a.m.
cold and foggy
I woke up with a headache
asked for some help –
Can we write a poem
together?
He shouted something about
red roses and blue violets
then left to take his morning shower.
8 a.m
I prepared breakfast
cooked multi-grains
a perfect breakfast
for senior citizens.
I was waiting
to begin work
writing a poem.
9 a.m.
I realized the poem
will have to wait.
He drove off on his Harley
A man on a mission
today is his day to shop
for his new Harley Sportster
at Thunder Harley Davidson shop.
2 p.m.
I passed some hours in my studio
cutting, pasting, painting
to music on the radio.
He shopped around-
colors
choices
prices
decisions
Afternoon shadows lengthened
diagonal across the road
3 p.m.
I held on to the notion
of writing a poem today.
4 p.m.
I heard the roar of Harley Thunder
the warrior in black leathers
returned home.
I thought,
maybe NOW
we can write the poem.
5 p.m.
I asked
“Are you ready now?”
he laughed
“You know I can’t write a poem.”
+
Besides
he came home without a new Harley
too many discussions
too many choices.
“Let’s forget about that damn poem!”

Backstory:
_A Togetherness Poem_
This poem covers the space of an entire day as I ask my husband to write a poem with me in the early morning. The result of my request develops through dialogue and musings about writing poetry with my husband. I selected this poem to share a relationship I have with my husband. On April 14, we were married sixty one years.
