I am sharing one of my six award-winning poems that is featured in the new publication, Mingled Voices5, published by Proverse (Hong Kong).

Her middle name is pronounced in French
Daughter of William Joseph and Esther Luella
Bill was orphaned at 3 when
Effie Pearl died from Spanish influenza
Bill was Irish and German, with red hair
Drafted into war before Virgo Girl’s birth.
Virgo girl arrived on a Friday
in August, 1943
Esther wrote letters to Europe
sent daily photos of Virgo Girl
kissed her fathers framed photo
every day for 2 years.
“Daddy is a piece of glass,” she thought.
Virgo Girl is the granddaughter of
Ida Matilda
a German woman who baked
yeast-breads, frosted cookies,
clover-leaf rolls and apple pies
each Saturday.
Her grandfather, James Addison,
sat at the kitchen table
used his 3-pronged fork
bone-handled knife
teased Ida, called her Dutch.
Virgo girl never knew her father’s family
David Garfield and Effie Pearl died young
County records reveal David was
well-known for his baseball skills
Effie’s obituary states she
was an honorable mother of five?
only two of five red-haired children
survived to adulthood.

by Germans, Irish, and Scandinavians

from Eastern European Jews
Greeks & Iberian ancestors.
Virgo Girl finds themes in Heaven
stars and timeless boundaries
poems and Ginkgo trees
peridot and garnets
black crows and feral cats.
afternoon daydreams.
Friday’s Child is loving and giving
Daughter of women who tend old-fashioned
pink roses and lily-of-the valley,
and children who
play in the woods, swim in the creeks
Daughter of men who draw pictures,
play trumpets, fight in wars and
build houses with skilled hands.
