Let’s Write a Cinquain.
What is a Cinquain poem?
A five-line poem created by American teacher and poet Adelaide Crapsey. She was born in 1878 in Brooklyn and lived most of her life in Rochester, NY.
Her new poetry form reflects her interest in Japanese Haiku and the tanka forms.
The Cinquain, typically, is expressive, vibrant, and dramatic.
The Instructions:
Line 1_ 1 Noun
Line 2_2 adjectives
Line 3_ 3 “ing” words (verbs)
Line 4_ 4 feeling words – or a feeling phrase with four words
Line 5_Another word for the Noun in line 1
My Example:
This cinquain poem’s inspiration is a visit to the catacombs in Salzburg, Austria.
I made some notes in my journal after completing a tour on July 10, 1991.
On February 20, 2021, as I was looking through my journal from that first visit to Salzburg, I saw the notes I wrote at that time. I used my notes and my memory to create the poem below.
During this first week of Lent, I thought about the tomb that held the body of Jesus after his crucifixion. I combined those thoughts with my sensory memory of being in the catacombs in Salzburg over thirty years ago.
Wall
ancient, eroded
holding, hiding, saving
lonely breathless dank touch
Tomb
