Today, as I worked on some submissions of poetry for a literary magazine,
I stopped for a time –
to work on a “little poem.”
This poem started out as a TANKA, but eventually I wanted to do something different and turned it into a Modern Lyrical Poem.
I’ve never known any of my Great-grandmothers. They all died very young.
In fact, I only knew 1 maternal grand mother for a little while in my life.
I imagine what a Great-grandmother might have been like. I think of her a lot. It seems like I feel all of my grandmothers when I am outside walking in the woods or along the creek bank, or standing in the meadow staring down at the rippling water. Even late at night, when I stand in silence to feel the sky. My whole body can feel them walking with me.
How about you?
Did you know your Great-grandmother?
If you wrote a poem about her, what would she be doing and where would you see it?
Mine sings and she loves to walk in the woods along the creek. She catches fish for her husband and children to eat;
and takes her grand-children swimming at night in the creek, when the moon is full.
She is one with Nature and she holds the memories of a thousand summers in her body.
In my imagination.

Here it is. It is the perfect theme for May, isn’t it!

“great-grandmother sings little songs”
great-grandmother sings little songs
moves beneath wet hemlock boughs
on the ridge overlooking a rushing creek
her feet slide over damp spring leaves
she feels the summer breeze
on the slippery pathway through the woods
she knows every leaf, bark and branch
by name
glances into the curly willow tree
responds to screaming crows
gathered for lunch
she looks at me and whispers
“We may catch some fish this afternoon.”
tonight we will
bathe in light of full Strawberry Moon.
