This week I have a lot of bulbs to get into the ground before the cold season arrives and the ground gets frozen. Tulips – Hyacinths – Daffodils- Iris corms.
I thought I would post a poem that reflects the growing and flowering seasons that are now nearly over here in western Pennsylvania.
Spring – Summer
Let’s take a moment to reflect on those wonderful months we all enjoy so much in our gardens. Here’s to the good memories and garden songs of Spring and Summer of 2022.
Nature Performs a Ritual

Nature performs a ritual
concerto of red cardinals
and red-breasted robins
bird-songs before dawn.
Daybreak.
Early summer landscape
permeated by a hot breeze
a short gust
sporadic puffs
intense rain
on yellow zinnias.
Japanese maple tree is
a crimson waterfall
of intricate cut leaves
splashed onto stony ground
conceals
hidden mourning dove
crouched silently in shadows
spreads sturdy grey wings low
shelters her nest.
Evening.
Wild plants flourish
like an invasion
in a wind-swept vortex
preoccupied with infiltration
planting and sowing
the nightly routine.
Virginia Creeper vines twist around
sensitive wild pink peonies
all-night showers emboldened
the graceful bright green
Lady ferns saturated by the routine
concoction of a
summer thunderstorm.
