Poem:
Autumnal Equinox (Abecedarian poem)
Autumnal Equinox, an astronomical event
begins the fall season.
Celebrations abound on one particular
day, balanced between
equal amounts of night and day.
Fall is a metamorphosis that changes
green deciduous trees into brilliant
hues that stand out like a splash of fireworks.
Iridescent, dazzling, shifting primary color are
juxtaposed beside blue-green hemlock trees.
Kaleidoscopic movements shift with autumn’s breeze.
Life forces flow as ancient Connoquenessing creek
moves furiously around Pennsylvania’s hills and valleys
never-ending twists and turns
over farmlands and forests.
Pennsylvania has the most variety
Quietly, the landscape changes when
rainy rural nights bring cooler days
September’s Pennsylvania fall lasts longer
than any other state.
Unusually dynamic, scenic forests with
variable weather conditions exist. Eastern or
Western Pennsylvania has no cities or towns that begin with
“x.”
Yet, geological
zones and regions are generously scattered across the state.

Backstory:
I wrote this poem to celebrate the landscape of Pennsylvania in the fall.
I included details that are unique about the fall season in Pennsylvania.
My own ancestral roots in Pennsylvania goe back to the arrival of Germanic immigrants in Philadelphia in 1730..This state is my home.
The fall equinox arrives on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 02:50 A.M. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox occurs at the same moment worldwide.
