Forever, Susan Lily
Archetypal clusters of Forever Susan Lily
bulbs arrived in the mail
cushioned with hoary moss
dusty bulbs and dry Iris corms.
Every single one will have a winter’s nap.
Forever Susan Asiatic Lilies
glorious manifestations beside
Hyacinth mix of purple and pink.
I imagine them thriving next spring.
Just think, How does Mother Nature
keep bulbs in frozen soil? I know she’s
laughing at winter snowstorms.
My pipedream endures for
Nature has perfect timing in her
ornate drawers of dreams-come-true.
Purple Dusky Challengers with black beards
quivering and tall.
Representative ambassadors
singing life-force.
That is who you are
, underground secrets of winter.
Victorious prize-winners
warbles in secretive clusters.
Xerophytic, ferns asleep in rocks and rubble
yearnings by washed-out pathways when it’s
zero degrees in the sunshine.
___the end.

How did the poem begin to take shape in my mind?
I was thinking of the bulbs and corms that arrived and how I had to get them planted before the ground freezes. The other thing that was on my mind was the beautiful ferns that are now in decay in my Zen Meditation Garden. Who could ever imagine how glorious they were for several months before our first frost that ruined them?
I know the word “Xerophytic”, is correct but the diminutive is so commonly used that I thought I’d use the proper plant name in my poem. In either case, it refers to a group of ferns that live in very arid places where you would never expect a fern to live. One thinks of ferns as living in damp shady spots, but many of them live in the sands of the desert or in the rocks and rubble of barren hillsides. They use several different stratagems to accomplish this.
I purchased my Forever Susan Lily Asiatic bulbs from
Spring Hill Nurseries BUY it here
I’ve purchased trees, bushes, bulbs, and flowering plants from Spring Hill Nurseries for decades. I have lived in my home in Western Pennsylvania since 1967 – just about every plant in our landscape came from this nursery over the years. Highly recommend them for whatever you might be looking for in the coming year.
